Choosing the Correct Drafting Chair

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Just as we make choices of furniture in our homes the choice of furniture, or as in this case, seating furniture, is just as important if not more.  Having the correct drafting chair at work has a detrimental effect on comfort and work production, especially if you will be spending long hours at work. At home we can always lie down, recline or even lay down. We do not have these choices at work, so being comfortable while sitting is very important. When sitting for long periods of time there is considerable strain placed on the spinal column and back.

Choosing the correct chair is more than a matter of fashion and style, your choice needs to be based on comfort, support and of course price. Stools do not provide the back support needed and are more for short term use. If you are going to be working for long periods it is recommend that a high quality chair be purchased. A good chair will provide good stability. Choose a model that sits firmly on the floor and does not lean from one side to the other. Also ensure that is has casters that can be locked in place to prevent unwanted sliding on smooth floors.

The model you decide on should be a good match to the height of the drafting table you will be working at. You should only have to lean forward just a bit to work; this will keep strain off the spinal column. It should also have an adjustment for the height as no chair will meet your table height exactly.

Next is the comfort of the chair and this will be determined by the amount of padding inside of the seat and back area of the chair. Be sure that you are not feeling the material the chair was made with when sitting down, the chair should feel firm but not hard but also comfortable. In addition choose a fabric that will stand up to everyday wear and tear, nothing is worse than a drafting chair with tears and rips in the fabric.

There are three styles of drafting chairs that can be selected and you should select the type that best suits your needs. Backless chairs or drafting chair stools provided no back support at all but are perfect for rolling around and they fit nicely under drafting tables.

Adjustable drafting chairs have adjustments for height and the angle of the back. Theses chairs are a good selection but there is one a little better. The ergonomic drafting chair is designed specifically for long term sitting and provides excellent posture support and extra thick padding for hours of comfortable sitting.

Make your selection considering the information above and by sitting in several chairs and imagining if you will be comfortable for a couple of hours at a time in this chair. Remember that comfort and support should be the driving force behind your selection.
